Computer Literacy

Despite the prevalence of computers and mobile devices in modern society, there are still a considerable number of u3a members who lack either the skills or confidence to use computers in anything but their most basic form, and who become quickly confused by the technical terminology often used.

There are a number of organisations which offer free online courses and tutorials on all aspects of computers. We would encourage members to explore some of these resources so that they can not only interact better with other u3a members and the publications from the groups they belong to, but can also become more competent, and less afraid, of using computers in their daily lives for everything from online shopping to online banking.

National u3a does periodically offer a number of courses on various aspect of IT, which can be accessed from the 'Learning' section of their website here.

There are also a large number of independent organisations around the world which offer online IT training tutorials, a few of which are listed below, but please note these haven't all been viewed and whilst they're listed in good faith, they can't be guaranteed:

Online Resource
GCF Learn Free - this an American site, but the short videos are useful
BBC WebWise - a series of short introductory tutorials
Digital Skills for Work and Life - from Future Learn and Accenture
Alison.com - Free Online Computer Skills Courses
Home and Learn - a series of video tutorials on several aspects of computers
Basic Computer Skills - another comprehensive American site from WISC
