About the u3a

u3a is a UK-wide movement which brings together people in their ‘third age’ to socialise, develop their interests, and continue their learning in a friendly and informal environment. There are no exams and no homework, just regular lessons or study groups

The 'third age' is defined by a time in your life (not necessarily chronological) where you have the opportunity to undertake learning for its own sake. There is no minimum age, but the focus is on people who have fully retired or who are no longer in full-time employment and have ceased raising their family.

Our founders envisaged a collaborative approach with peers learning from each other. The u3a movement was to be self-funded, with members not working towards qualifications but learning purely for pleasure. There would be no distinction between the learners and the teachers – everyone could take a turn at being both if they wished.

From its beginnings in 1981, the movement grew very quickly and by the early 1990s, a u3a was opening every fortnight. u3as grew in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and in 2008 membership was increasing by 11% every year. 2010 saw our membership hitting the quarter million mark.

At the end of 2016 the u3a movement reached the milestone of 1,000 u3as, celebrated by a conference with speakers including Eric Midwinter – one of the founders of the u3a movement.

Today, our movement includes over 430,000 u3a members in more than 1,000 u3as  and is continuing to grow every day.

u3a Vision and Mission

Our Vision

Our Vision is to make lifelong learning, through the experience of u3a, a reality for all third agers.

Our Mission

Our Mission declares our purpose as an organisation and serves as the standard against which we weigh our actions and decisions. It is to:

  • Facilitate the growth of the u3a movement.
  • Provide support for management and learning in u3as.
  • Raise the profile of the u3a movement.
  • Promote the benefits of learning in later life through self-help learning.
The Principles of the u3a Movement

The u3a movement is non-religious and non-political and has three main principles:

1. The Third Age Principle

  • Membership of a u3a is open to all in their third age, which is defined not by a particular age but by a period in life in which full time employment has ceased.
  • Members promote the values of lifelong learning and the positive attributes of belonging to a u3a .
  • Members should do all they can to ensure that people wanting to join a u3a can do so.
2. The Self-help Learning Principle

  • Members form interest groups covering as wide a range of topics and activities as they desire; by the members, for the members.
  • No qualifications are sought or offered. Learning is for its own sake, with enjoyment being the prime motive, not qualifications or awards.
  • There is no distinction between the learners and the teachers; they are all u3a members.
3. The Mutual Aid Principle

  • Each u3a is a mutual aid organisation, operationally independent but a member of The Third Age Trust, which requires adherence to the guiding principles of the u3a movement.
  • No payments are made to members for services rendered to any u3a.
  • Each u3a is self-funded with membership subscriptions and costs kept as low as possible.
  • Outside financial assistance should only be sought if it does not imperil the integrity of the u3a movement.

About Sutton Coldfield u3a

Sutton Coldfield u3a is a learning cooperative, run by volunteers, which draws upon the knowledge, experience and skills of our own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership.

Formed in 1983, Sutton Coldfield u3a currently has around 1,300 members from all walks of life, living in the area of Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding suburbs, making it the third largest u3a in Britain.

We have an extensive programme of events and meetings that are organised by some 60 different interest groups, covering such fields as arts, languages, sciences, physical exercise, mental challenges, social and recreational activities – all with a ‘fun‘ element – most of which are held at modern and well-equipped meeting rooms located in the conference centre of the United Reformed Church (URC) in the town centre, although we have no affiliation with the URC in any respect. A smaller number of other meetings are held in a variety of halls around the town, with some of the smaller groups meeting in a member's home.

To reassure you, all Sutton Coldfield u3a members are insured against accidental injury to or death of any person and accidental loss or damage to material property not belonging to you, which arises or is caused in connection with an official u3a activity.

Sutton Coldfield u3a is a Registered Charity. Our number is #1037540
