Ukulele, Beginners

Group Number:5.78

Time: 10.00 am

Definitive meeting times for the current month are shown in the Monthly Calendar.

This group was established in 2020, when it became difficult to absorb new beginners into the original group, because it had become too advanced.

This new group has also made excellent progress since we restarted after the Covid
lockdowns. It has joined the Improvers Group in performances, such as at Streetly All Saints Church Christmas Tree Festival and in the Gracechurch Shopping Centre, to celebrate 40 years of u3a.

The aim is to have fun through playing the ukulele and singing a variety of songs of
different styles.

You will learn different strumming styles and finger picking. You will develop your musical theory skills, for instance, learning about chords and keys, reading ukulele tablature and perhaps some standard musical notation. You will also learn about the technical side of the instrument, such as tuning and strings and how to look after your ukulele. This all sounds a bit daunting, but you will gradually realise that you are picking up the new information. Chords which seemed really difficult, will soon be tripping off your fingers with ease!

Playing the ukulele is a wonderful way to have fun and make new friends, while giving your brain a jolly good workout.

To join this group, you will need a ukulele, a tuner and a music stand.

However, if you don’t yet have an instrument, one can be loaned for a few sessions and advice given on what to buy.

We have had several new members recently, so unfortunately, if you are a complete
beginner, both on ukulele and musically, you will have to go on our waiting list.
If you already know the basic chords, and have some knowledge of music, you should be able to join the group.

Please contact the organiser for further information.
